If you're friends with me on Facebook, then you've probably heard all of this already . . .
But, these last couple of days have been brutal.
My sister has Addison's Disease. When she gets sick, she gets really sick.
On Sunday evening, she was taken to the ER after being unable to control her nausea. By 3am, she had been taken from the ER to ICU.
For the first 24hours, we had very little information.
We knew there was an infection. We knew she may be septic. We knew she was in a tremendous amount of pain.
Yesterday evening we were told that she was, in fact, septic. I immediately panicked because sepsis, as I understood it, meant the infection was in the blood and the worst possible outcome.
This morning the doctors gave us (my mother) more concrete answers. There is a severe infection in her kidneys and bladder, and she is septic; however, the infection is not in her bloodstream (insert sigh of relief). Clearly my googling left me mis-informed. She also picked up e.coli from the ER and was in kidney failure.
Thankfully the doctors were smart enough not to mention kidney failure to my Mom until after they had it under control. That kind of stuff tends to make her panic.
Leah was moved from the ICU to a regular room this afternoon, which is a great sign. She's still very ill, but moving in the right direction.
